Acts 2:1-21

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord[a] in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’[b]

Acts 2:38

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 1:8

8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me[a] in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Luke 24:49

49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem[i] until you are endued with power from on high.”

1 Cor. 12:3, 12:4-11, 12:12-13

24 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them,[a] came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly[b] perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’

And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying[c] by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

13 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles[d] from Jerusalem.

Rom. 8:26-27

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us[b] with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Gal. 5:25, 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

To me to be like him to be like God. How does he make us be like him out as they do it. By what force. By the Holy Spirit he does it by the Holy Spirit and our him this morning said melt me and mold me his refining fire cleanses us purifies us to make us be like him and mold me he shapes us he is the potter and he shapes us into the kind of character he wants us to have the kind of child he wants us to be. Breathable me a breath of God. So you know we’re going to talking about the Holy Spirit this morning Amen. But before I. Get into the scripture I found a little story that it really just made me laugh and it just kind of to lighten things up sometimes we need to lighten up a little bit right we need a laughter we need a little bit of laughter Amen this story is shared by a minister and this minister put an ad in the local paper asking for a well rounded handyman who could fix things around the church and help out with the routine chores this is true story the very next morning after the read the ad ran a well dressed young man came to church and asked to speak to the minister. To Pastor sized up the young man and then ask a flurry of questions can you start a fire Yes sir can you have breakfast ready every morning by seven yes sir can you polish the silver Moss that this is yes sir can you keep things picked up and meet the lawn mowed Yes sir and Mr continued and of course there will be electrical problems and unexpected leaky pipes and restroom overflows and and more and more and young man all sudden interrupted he said wait a minute he says I came here to arrange for my wedding but it was. Going to be like that I think I was going to cancel the whole thing. That story just really made me laugh the other night as I was preparing things and there were two other stories that went with it and both of them were believers that were sharing funny stories about and all three of more funny stories about believers sharing stories about themselves but the point was that a good person with a strong faith and a healthy character they can share funny things about themselves and just laugh and not feel you know intimidated or feel bad about it so do you have a good character that you can just share some of the silly things we do I know I’ve done a lot of silly things of the years and I’m sure I’ve shared a few of them. So with that. Let’s begin this morning with our scripture which comes from Acts chapter two verses one through twenty one hear the word of the Lord. When the day of Pentecost had fully come they were all with one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled the whole house where they were sitting then there appeared to them divided tongues as a fire and one sat on each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit of began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance and they were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews devout men from every nation under heaven that’s key from every nation under heaven they were all gathered there and when this sound occurred the multitude came together and were confused because everyone heard them speaking in his own language then they were all amazed and marveled saying to one another look are not all these who speak Galileans And how is it that we hear each in our own language in which we were born Parthians and Medes and Ellen mites those dwell in the massive but massive but Tamia. Judea capita C upon just an Asia pirate pan philia Egypt and the parts of Libya joining Sirene visitors from Rome both Jews and proselytes Christians and Arabs we hear them speaking in our own tongue the wonderful works of God How. When we’re given the Holy Spirit What’s it for it’s not for our own glorification it’s to speak the wonderful works of God Amen so they were all amazed and perplexed saying to one another what ever could this mean others mock saying they are full of new wine but Peter standing up with the eleven races voice and said to them men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem let this be known to you and heed my words for these are not drunk as you suppose since it is only the third hour of. The day but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel and his cell come to pass in the last day says God that I will pour out of my Spirit on all flesh your sons and your daughters shall prophesied your young men sell see visions your old man shall dream dreams and all my manservant and all my maid servants I will pour out of my spirit in those days and they shall prophesied I will show Wonders and heavens above above and signs and the earth beneath blood and fire and vapor of smoke the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord and his cell come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be say a. Man to that Amen I’m going to pause on my ass Bishop trail a few openness and prayer. Yes. Rumors. Oh. You’re. A man you know a couple weeks ago and might even last question about the you know the revivals that have many years ago with. White field and. Well you know guy’s name anyway Wesley West John Wesley and Whitefield in those many times the power of the spirit was so. Full In present that many people were coming forward and say before they even spoke a word because of the power of the Holy Spirit you know when Jesus gave the Great Commission in Matthew twenty eight he said to go into all the world and preach the gospel. We know that this passage of Scripture is known as the day of Pentecost the day in which he gave his Holy Spirit he promised them that he was going to send the Holy Spirit of God and he told them to go into Wait don’t go in your own power you go in you wait you wait until the comforter comes you wait to the Holy Spirit comes and that’s what this passage is all about the Holy Spirit coming but I found it amazing he gave the Great Commission said Go into all the world but this passage reveals who all was there. People from all over the world were there so what a way to kick off. The going to tall the world he had people there from all different nations to be able to experience them witness is amazing event they are born of the Holy Spirit they heard the gospel message that whoever calls in the name of the Lord shall be saved and they heard that in their own language and then they in turn took it back to their nation what a way I mean to send off the god. The message he says go into all the world what he brought them there for this Joyce occasion and then sent them back to their homelands you know some people get a little uncomfortable when it comes to discussing Pentecost and the reason why is because all there they go they’re going to be talking about tongues again that’s all they want to talk about when they think of Pentecost but that’s not just that’s not all it’s about it’s not just about tongues but I want to say this about it to me the miracle there was the hearing. It was the hearing of the gospel message they say how is it that we all here in our own language I’m going to tell you that miracle was so great that Peter could be standing up there preachin in whatever language it was it may have been his own no language were it may have been a language from God that enabled all of them to hear it in their native tongue so the miracle is in the hearing of the gospel message so don’t get all tense and wound up when it’s talking about Pentecost because there’s more than one gift to the always Spirit and God Poor says spirit out O. new on all flesh all who will believe in His Son Jesus Christ. Go and preach the gospel. You know this was a not a dynamic thing when the Holy Spirit came that day. But the truth is a said there are many gifts there’s the gift of prophecy there’s the gift of visions there’s the gift of dreams how Alou you there is the gift of miracles we just heard of one this morning a little wave Oh there’s the gift of healing there’s a gift of teaching there’s the gift of helps there’s the gift of discerning. There’s the gift of the Spirit the Holy Spirit there’s the gift of interpretation there is the gift of tongues. And we might get back to these gifts I think I’m sure we’re going to but I want to look at exactly what is the meaning. Of pentacles What does the word mean the English word Pentecostalist as a transliteration of the Greek word it sounds very familiar Pentecostalists which means fifty. In a confirmation Christian expression spoken Pentecost a Amera which means fiftieth day. So the Greek mean is not a New Testament meaning is a Jewish holiday as the Festival of weeks or simply weeks the name came from an expression of the biggest twenty three sixteen that instructed to people to count seven weeks or fifty days from Passover to the next holiday so I ask you how long ago was Easter Passover. Use or short this morning fifty days it means fifty days we know that when Jesus was resurrected that he appeared to the disciples and many others for forty days forty days he was seen by over five hundred people and them before he left he told them again already said to go and wait go in wait you go and wait for the Holy Spirit to come. He didn’t want them going out on their own power to try to do. The mission of the church he won the weight for the Holy Spirit so then we know that ten days later the Holy Spirit came. And I’m going to liken it to this I was going to save it for the end but I can’t. You know how many here has a car. You’ll have a car. We’ll have a lot of have a car and you know I don’t have the largest share just with me this morning. If you have a car how would you like me to take that engine out of your car so that every word you go you’ve got to push that thing. You’ve got to push our body out recall right push a little faster you know push we’re not getting very far. Yes you know and it’s not going to make it up to many hills I mean you might coast down. The downward slope OK But you know you might go through a little flat but you get back to that hill is going to be tough to push that thing up that hill and you know most people probably don’t have a firm understanding on exactly how that engine works you know that you get in there you put that key in ladies and you turn in your own room and it fires up and away you go but listen that engine is the heart and soul of that car because without it you’ve got to push it like I just said but that engine when you turn a key you’ve got a lecture to comes from a battery to a starter that gets the engine go on so then that starts pumping in air and fuel to create a fire. Man there’s a summons there with the Holy Spirt they had a mighty rushing when the air and they had the fire the tang the fire that’s the power that’s the power of the church is the Holy Spirit the same way that engine is the power in your car you don’t want to go out you’re getting a car and try to go somewhere without your engine because it’s going to be difficult one to tell you you don’t want to go out there and try to be a missionary or an evangelist without the power of the Holy Spirit you might do it but on the tele you’re not going to last very long. Well I can’t help but I get must get myself excited sometimes nor just gaming out the Smalling to get me excited now where was I. Wow. Pentecost is the birth of the church it is the birth of the church what an amazing example of the mission of the church you know after that dynamic us experience Peter went on to explain to the people that gather together. You don’t have this from Dave because I’ve got it later Acts chapter two verses twenty two. Three twenty four men of Israel hear the words Jesus of Nazareth a man a tested by God to you by miracles wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst as you yourselves also know him being delivered by the determined purpose and for knowledge of God You have taken his speaking directly to the people you have taken by lawless hands have crucified and put the death whom God raised up having loose the pains of death because it was not possible that he should be helped by it so Peter pointed out to them these are some of the same papal that earlier were heart hollerin in the crowd crucify Him He is revealing their sins he reveals or error to them. So they ask what should we do what should we do what can we do we realize we were guilty. So what did Peter say then and Acts chapter two again Peter said to them Repent acceptor to thirty eight to forty one repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins and you shall receive the Holy Spirit so how do we receive the Holy Spirt we replant and are baptized and we shall receive the Holy Spirit sent from God for the promise is to you and to your children and to all who are far off as many as the Lord our God will call and with many other words he testified in exhorted them saying be saved from this perverse generation then those who gladly received his word were baptized and that day about three thousand souls were added to them how illusia not a bad response for Peter’s first sermon is it three thousand souls coming to the Lord how little you how was he able to do that by the power of the Holy Spirit. Because of the Holy Spirit. He was still been back or waiting in that room. Trying to do it only zone power. You know there are some scholars that have question historicism who are historicity of action after two they observe that this event appears in the New Testament only in Acts and it describes miraculous events that are beyond the scope of his store historical inquiry these scholars tend to view Pentecost as a powerful metaphor for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the early church rather than an event that gave the birth to the church while I’m here today to say that if you are a Bible believing Christian that we believe that this is the an error and follow the Word of God and that we believe this to be absolutely true it is an event that did happen it happened just as it is recorded in God’s word. We are to trust God’s word. So we believe this account it happened just as it says it did. What is the spiritual significance of Pentecost this Pentecost really matter today. Doesn’t matter today. It does indeed. It is very important today is already alluded to but Acts Chapter one Verse eight says but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. What is the purpose of receiving the Holy Spirit. What is the purpose to bear witness of him. We don’t receive the Holy Spirit that we can stand in front of small crowds or even thousands in look good preach. Or. Said. Good we don’t receive the Holy Spirit for our own edification but we receive it that we might be a witness for God a witness for his mighty works for his power for his wonderful grace that is the reason for the giving of the Holy Spirit it’s all about him Romans eight eleven says but at the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead wells in you he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you so in other purposes that it brings life. To these mortal bodies Amen in Luke twenty four forty nine he says Behold I send the promise of my father upon you but Terry in the city of Jerusalem to your dude with power from on high. What happened at Pentecost can and does continue to happen today in a Christian church you know we may not see. Daily quite dynamic fashion if they experience we might not see the tongues of fire we might not hear that mighty Russian win but that doesn’t mean that we won’t it doesn’t mean that we can’t. But it doesn’t mean that the Spirit hasn’t come either just because we don’t see the tongues but will see the actions of the people will he will hear the witness of God working through those that are filled with the Spirit of God Amen. We are meant to still live in the presence in the power of the Holy Spirit today. The Holy Spirit helps us to confess Jesus Christ as Lord First Corinthians twelve three says Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus a curse and no one can say that Jesus is is Lord except through the Holy Spirit. So if you can set there today and confess with your lips that Jesus Christ is my lord. You’re saying that through the power of the Holy Spirt can you say that with me Jesus Christ is ma Lord I said Ma because I’m making it personal. Because if I could say Jesus Christ as her lord that doesn’t mean that I can say it in here because in my heart. So you confess it with your lips that Jesus Christ is Lord you’re doing it with the power of the Holy Spirit in here the Spirit empowers us to serve God with supernatural power I will get back to the gifts First Corinthians twelve four through eleven there are diversities of gifts gifts but the same spirit I’m having trouble problems of none seniors’ morning there are differences of ministry but the same Lord there are diversities of activities but the same God who works all in all but the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit to another faith by the same Spirit to another gifts of healings again by the same Spirit to another the working of miracles to another prophecy to another discerning of spirits to another different kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues but one and the same spirit works all these things distributing to each one individually as He wills. A man is not as I will to do but it is as He wills Lord let that I will be done that I will be done in May for your glorification not mine a man the spirit binds us together as a body of Christ twelve and thirteen said for as the body is one has many members but all members of that body of that one body being many are one body so also in Christ four by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks whether slaves are free and all have been made to drink into one speared it doesn’t matter if we’re slaves It doesn’t matter for free it doesn’t matter if we’re rich or doesn’t matter if we’re poor We’re bound together in one body by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to pray. Romans eight twenty six. Likewise the spirit also helps us in our weakness for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought but the spirit self makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. To Spirit intercedes for us with God the Father eight twenty seven. Now he searches the heart knows what the mind of the Spirit is because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. How do you this spirit knows the will of God Sometimes our Will gets in the way of us see in the will of God clearly but the spirit always knows the will of God That’s why it’s important that we spread pray in the spirit because he knows the will of God. The Spirit guides us Galatians five twenty two if we live in the Spirit let us also walk in the spirit. If we’re walking in the spirit he guides and directs our paths. And most importantly or just as very importantly the Spirit helps us to live like Jesus Galatians five twenty two twenty three says but the fruit of the speared So if you’re filled with the spear and walking in the spear the fruit of the Spirit is love it is joy peace longsuffering kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness self-control and again sets there is no law. The Alpo outpouring the Holy Spirit of Pentecost truly was the birth of the church. Truly was the birth of the church. But it continues today. These first Christians lived out their new found faith together they lived together in one accord they shared their belongings with one another they took care of one another if nobody went hungry because they all came and provided for one another they took care of the needy. You know there’s more to the way they shared for one another than meets the eye if you just casually read this you know there were many people from many different nations so you know you had many people from many different walks of life gathered there together and you know that they were at one of cord. The apostle Paul writes in Galatians three twenty eight. That there is no longer Greek there is no longer slave or free there’s no longer male or female for for all of you are wanting Christ when one is truly filled with the Holy Spirit. If the spirit is live in a new all jealousies are gone. They’re gone you’re not jealous of what your neighbor has all arrogance is gone. If they were all gathered from all different nations there in Jerusalem they would. They didn’t look down on the needy or the poor. If the Spirit of God is living in you all prejudices are gone. All evil ways are gone all wicked thinking is gone it is filled with the Holy Spirit it is still with love joy peace. For we are all wanting Christ we are to be a community in which we are drawn together in God by the Holy Spirit. Peter sermon help the people understand what all this meant. He cited a portion of the Joel’s prophecy which already read and reread it in the last days God says I will pour out my Spirit upon all people your sons and your daughters will prophesied your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams and in the day those days I will pour out my Spirit even all my servants my servants men and women alike and they will prophesied the power of the Holy Spirit should not be something that we shy away from church. On the contrary we should long for the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us individually and corporately as a body. To accomplish God’s will to accomplish God’s ministry for our church and for our individual lives. But again remember what he told the disciples wait wait we cannot do it under our own power we cannot do it in the flesh we can only do it with the help of the Holy Spirit. So if you have been allowed the Holy Spirit to commend your life in guide you and control you and lead you. Please don’t leave before you do please do it today simply put Leggo of the fleshly things let go of want to do things by yourself in your own way let go and that God Let God through the power of the Holy Spirt be the Lord of your life. Let the Holy Spirit move you let the Holy Spirit speak through you let the Holy Spirit work through these hands and feet that the Holy Spirit have control this mind of thinking Holy Spirit control these thoughts control every thought that comes into this mind is what we should be praying control every word comes out of this mouth. Let it edify let a build up let it not tear down let it speak life and not death. Let the Holy Spirit can. Show you let it be your prayer. Spirit of the Living God fall afresh upon me or breathe on me a breath of God that that be our prayer today Church. Breathing on me a breath of God fill me he wants to fill us that were overflowing that if flows out of us to those around the same and that’s the purpose of the Holy Spirit Amen.
