Exodus 20:1-17

And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thou-sands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Eph. 6:1-3

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

Gen. 2:18, 1:27-28a

18 And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper compa-rable to him.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Mark 7:8-13

8 For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” 9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradi-tion. 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Matt. 5:21-24

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

You know every week they take I’ve been with the kids for this quarter and you know so many good lessons just for the kids and today one of the Scripture verses was that he has made perfect those who are being made holy. And that is also when you really stop and let that sink in his care to so that that sink in for a moment we are made perfect but being made Holy See what I’m saying or God’s not done with me yet he’s still he’s not done with you yet he’s still working on you he’s still working now that perfect and being made holy we get to the place where we think. Shrub got it all figured out how I’m so holy and righteous I know it all well guess what he does made for a big sin because you don’t have it all figured out the more I learned I’m poor I know I have to learn they meant we are being made holy every day about that spirit to work in our lives and make us more holy more and more like him. We’re going to continue with the Ten Commandments and today I’m going to try to cover to number five and number six honor your father and mother that’s the name of the sermon this morning and shall not murder the forward again us go and have a word of prayer loving heavenly Father we do praise you and magnify you for your presence in our lives we thank you that you are with us each and every day bother every Not just every morning we wake up the father even in the night we were sleeping you were always with us through your Holy Spirit we thank you for the comforter to guide us and be with us to encourage us and Father we just invite you to have their own way the small any father open our ears to receive what you have force just bless us with your glorious presence father that we would go out of this place with the joy of the Lord in our hearts and far that others would see the love and the joy that we have and desire that also father and may your spear. Help us to be bold and courage to lead others to you in the Word made all be for your glory in your honor in Jesus’ name amen our scripture lesson again one comes from Exodus Chapter twenty verse one through seventeen and God spoke all these words saying I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt out of the house of bondage you shall have no other gods before me you shall not make for yourselves a carved image any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or of as that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth you shall not bow down to them nor serve them for I the LORD your God am a jealous God visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me but showing mercy to thousands to those who love me and keep my commandments you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy six days you sell labor and do all your work but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God in it you shall do no work you nor your son nor your daughter nor your male servant nor your female servant nor your cattle nor your stranger who is within your gates for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that is in them and rested the seventh day therefore the Lord bless the Sabbath day and how did it. Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the lamb which the LORD your God is giving you you shall not murder you shall not commit adultery you shall not steal you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor you shall not covet your neighbor’s house you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife nor his male servant nor his female servant nor his ox nor his dunking or anything that is your neighbor’s to day we’re not going to covet their ox we’re going to cover their car with a motorcycle. Right. I don’t have a problem with not covered in the ox is I don’t want one of those. That we have those tend Mamet’s memorize yet we’re working on it right this morning I want to begin with a question for you Do you believe that God absolutely will honor a promise that he makes to you. I think either one in agreement there so of course he will because God cannot lie he will not lie he has truth so therefore if you believe that God will honor his promises I’ll ask you a second question do you want to live a long life. Yes So then we better give heed to that Fifth Commandment the says Honor your father and mother because it is the commandment that comes with promise Now remember last week I said the fourth commandment only want to says Remember the Fifth Commandment comes with a promise. And it applies even to the New Testament church because if you read evasions Chapter six verse one through three it says Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with promise it comes with a promise that you that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth so if you wanted to be well with your life and you want to live long pon the earth live to a ripe old age well advanced in years honor your father and mother the Old Testament word translated honor. Or the Hebrew word is cup odd which means to be having waited grevious hard rich glorious burdensome That’s a lot of words mixed in there but in some ways. It doesn’t sound good does it it sounds bad it means I mean come on heavy but when it relates to our parents. There’s something really meaningful to it. That we should not take lightly or responsibility to honor and to care for our parents. It’s not to be taken lightly that’s why that’s what it means by heavy it should be a significant property of ours. To take their needs into our consideration the feet other Greek word in the fee Jand six to is tomato it means to determine the value of something in this case concerning our parents that we should determine it and give it very high value. Our parents should have a very high value in our lives in our responsibility for them and I know that you know there are some parents Well let’s let me back up there are some people that have brought children into this world that really aren’t what I’m going to term as parents because I’m going to give you Ronnie’s definition of a parent a parent is one that cares for their children that loves their children that pro text their children that provides for their children and is there for their children I don’t need to go on there are some people that have brought children into this world that are not parents. The way that God intended them to be. Parents should be those that take care of their children love and respect are children those are kind of parents that we must on yes we are to respect and honor our parents I mean there are parents out there or fathers and mothers out there that are absolutely wicked they’re evil they’re harmful to the children and it’s be hard to honor and respect that type of parent so it’s just fully that though. Many people I think today do not understand the significance of the family unit the family unit that I believe with all my heart that God instituted in Genesis chapter two eighteen it says in the LORD God said it is not good that man should be alone I will make him a helper comparable to him you know he he made even took a rib from Adam and made even he brought the woman to man and there God instituted marriage one man one woman Genesis chapter one twenty seven twenty eight first part of twenty eight So God created man in his own image in the image of God He created him male and female he created them then God bless them and God said to them Be fruitful and multiply fill the earth and subdue it there he instituted family man and woman was to come together have children a multiply and fill the earth he has instituted family. Anyone that would take an honest true assessment of the family unit today in our society you would almost have to agree that it has become under attack the family unit the way God intended to be has come under attack by the evil one by Satan and he is using the music industry Hollywood liberal minded leaders and liberal minded organizations to attack the family. The way that he has intended. What when was the last time that you saw a modern T.V. series episode of a normal family portrayed. Can you name me one I cannot think of one but I don’t watch a ton of television I can’t think of one modern series that portrays the family unit the way that God intended one man one woman happily loving and raising their children together. Everybody’s thinking I see the wheels going I can’t think of one. OK I don’t even know that when I’ve not watched it. We used to have shows like Leave It to Beaver June and Ward happy family raising your children we used to have I Love Lucy she was a little crazy but it was funny but normal family husband and wife raising a child Dick Van Dyke Ozzie and Harriet Little House On The Prairie all these families they had issues the work through and the Waltons Yes we used to have many Thing series that portray the normal family the way God intended to be today shows are either unwed parents single parents gay parents whatever raising kids and we should not take these things lightly because there’s an agenda behind that the agenda is to destroy the institution of family. The agenda is to make that which is wrong look right and that which is right look wrong. The agenda is the normal god fearing moral family to make them look like they are wrong that they should that the new norm is womb ever whatever with kids they want that to look like the new norm but friends that’s not the way God intended it he intended that one man one woman would raise their children to love them and teach them about him I’m going to defend the single I did say single there there are many single parent families out there that that mom or that dad is doing a fabulous job raising their children or their child because many of them have been thrust into that situation not by their own choosing I will defend them as I Will they have done a great job. One said right here to set me here that was thrown into that situation did and but now doing a great job raising your children. So I will defend that. But Hollywood is trying to destroy the music industry liberal minded leaders trying to destroy the family unit the way God intended it to be. I shared all that to share this because honor and respect. Do not come naturally doesn’t. It doesn’t come natural. I’ll tell you what comes natural misbehaving. I mean who ever had to teach her kids to be selfish and not want to share their toys. None of us are right we have to teach kids to respect we have to teach kids to be honored and the best place for that to happen is in the home yes it can happen here church it can happen in school with good teachers but the best place for it to happen is in the home teach a child. I found a real good tale and actually it’s got a little bit of dishonoring nerve showing the importance of honoring and they say that this is just a tale so I’m not going to claim it as a true story once there was a little old man his eyes blinked and his hands trembled severely and when he ate he clattered to silverware distressingly he often missed his mouth actually probably missed his mouth more often than he hit it and he dribbled a bit of food on a table cloth and he lived with his married son. Having nowhere else that he could live in His wife his son’s wife did not like that arrangement I can’t have this she said it interferes with my right to happiness so seeing her husband took the old man and gently but firmly by the arm and they led him to the corner in the kitchen and there they set him on a stool and gave Miss food an earthenware bowl from then on he always ate in the quarter corner blinking at the table with with four wives but one day’s hands trembled rather more than usual and the earthenware bowl fell and broke the daughter and all cried out You are a pig you must eat out of a trough so they made him a little wooden trough and he got the eighty’s meals and natural. These people had a four year old son whom they were very proud of but one evening as a young man noticed that his boy was playing intently with some bits of wood and asked What do you don’t want Why says Dad he says I’m making a trough so when I get big I can let you mom eat out of it. The parents stood there not saying it worked for a while then they began to cry they went and got that old man brought him out the corner and from that day on he said at the table with the rest of the people and they’d offer regular plates. That little child taught them a lesson in honoring their parents don’t throw him in the corner. But love him and care for him even if it gets messy because you know relationships can be messy Jesus addressed how we should honor and take care of our parents and Mark Chapter seven verses eight through thirteen for laying aside the commandment of God you hold to tradition the men the washing of pitchers and cups and many other such things you do he said to them all too well you reject the commandment of God that you may keep your tradition for Moses said Honor your father and your mother and he curses father mother that him be put to death but you say if a man says to his father or mother or whatever prophet you might have received from me as Corben that is a gift to God then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother making the Word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down and many sets things you do. Leading up to this passage prior to that the Jewish leaders were criticizing the disciples and criticizing Jesus himself for eating with unwashed hands it was the Jewish custom that they went through this ritual to wash their hands every time before they would go to eat just in case they might have been defiled by touching something that a Gentile had touched so they had just long tradition they would go through. Jesus turned the table on and didn’t eat so them that they were actually breaking the commandments of God in order to keep their tradition. Some of the Jews. This Corbin that he’s talking about is whenever they would make a vow say that’s just poor number they’re going to make a vow that they’re going to contribute ten thousand dollars to God Well they couldn’t touch that then because they’ve made a vow that that was supposed that they wouldn’t have to give it then it might be years from now but that money set aside about the god it’s Corben so they couldn’t touch it so then they would neglect their parents because although I can’t use that I can afford to take care of them that’s what Corbin was and that’s what they were doing to get out of the responsibility of caring for their parents the religious leaders missed the most important point of the commandments. They missed the relational part of the commandments my friends when you look at the commandments do you see that you see that there’s a relational part of the commandments when God says You shall have no other God before me it’s because he wants us to have of an intimate relationship only with him. No other gods we can’t worship God among many other gods when God says I don’t want you to make an engraving images it’s because he wants that relationship with him to be so closely doesn’t want us forced being things that we make with our hands. When God says Remember the Sabbath day. Here I’m going home backward saying I’m I’m not going to get to take a man with so much when God says Remember the Sabbath Day Take a minute and think about the relational side of that God said. I don’t want your sons or your daughters working I don’t want your male or female servants working so you’re a business and you’re going to be faithful to God You’re going to give your servants the day off. You’re going to let them rest. And then if you’re the worker you’re like Father thank You that you’ve given me a day that I can spin with you. Build that relationship I realize you have to work six days a week very hard but I have given you the seventh day as a blessing as a relational thing that you can have that relationship with me. In Mark. Was it. It says The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. See there were there relational parts in there. Man was not made for the Sabbath if we was left to our own doings we’d work seven days a week fourteen fifteen hours a day to cumulate whatever. But the Sabbath was made for a man to be a blessing that we can grow in our relationship with him. And then the honoring our mothers and fathers he gave us the family unit he gave us the family unit that he would see and help us to have that relational thing down here on Earth with mothers and fathers and. Bothers and sons and daughters and mothers and sons and daughters it’s that relational thing we see we grow we learn to love we learn to respect we learn to honor but then when we learn we learn how to do that here then we learn how to honor in love him respect him also honor your father mother relation to relational thing. You know as a second one more thing is kind of goes back to the the religious leaders and they were so intent on the law they completely missed the relational thing just like the Sabbath thing they were not they were they weren’t supposed to walk because they walked on the dusty road they might make a furry if they stirred up dust that’s making a furry one time the Jesus and the disciples were walking through the field and the disciples began to pick grains ahead what they do so they’re picking grains ahead only because they’re hungry so they’re harvesting Oh that’s bad. Then they’re rolling it in their hands to get the chap off right well that’s windowing. And then so they was preparing a meal and forbid one to been on the Sabbath they missed the relational park there too as so many times they missed the relational part of the commandments if we follow these commandments is helping us to love him to grow in our relationship with the father I’ve got completely away from my notes were mine. Let’s move on to the sixth commandment and some of my ARE help with these notes you shall not murder. You know I think most everyone probably understands that you know that’s pretty much universal around the world that you shall not murder the murder is a crime you should not do it right everyone pretty well understands that. But is killing always a sin no because there are times when we will one nation will go to war well you know we hate war but Nations will go to war with one another and you have to defend your nation you know if someone comes to invade our nation we’re going to go to war against them we’re going to fight so they won’t invade our nation or try to get them out of our nation that is not murder yes it’s killing but that is not murder if someone breaks into your home and they have a weapon and you have a weapon and you kill them that is not murder murder is when we with the anger or bitterness in our hearts build to a place where we think a payoff had it I’m going to take that person’s life because the anger bitterness many times you think of war you’d have men on the battlefield fight one another that they didn’t hate one another they’re there because they’re they’re serving your country defending their country not that they necessarily had anything against that person that they just fired a gun. But murder is anger anger bitterness it builds and it builds and it builds inside until it finally ends with murder. You shall not murder. Jesus said this you have heard that it was said to those of oh you shall not murder and whoever murders he will be in danger of judgment but I say to you whoever is angry with his brother without cause shall be in danger of judgment and whoever says to his brother shall be in danger of the council but whoever says You fool shall be in danger of Hell’s fire Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you leave your gift there before the altar and go your way first be. Reconciled to your brother and then come and give your gift. Again relationship. Yes there’s a there’s going to be times in our lives we’re. A brother a sister a friend they’re going to make us mad but what are we supposed to do when that happens we’re supposed to go to that person set down communicate talk it out work it out pray. Pray for that one that we have ought against pray for them seek them out work out our differences you don’t let that thing whatever it is set in there in that or you don’t let it set there and fester and build and become infected to the point toward you grow so angry that you’re going to go after murder and no you work it out you’ve you come to the altar and you think of a brother that you have something against what’s it say Get up go find that brother reconcile your differences reach men that relationship so that it will not lead to murder we are to love our brothers there’s another passage that says treat your enemy with kindness it’s like keeping coals of fire on her head. We’re to love our brothers and sisters were to love our neighbors as ourselves aren’t we. So let’s really to hold to think the days about relationship let’s love that brother sister that’s different than us. You know they may not look like us they may be a different color they may not act like us they may not go to the same church we go to they might not have the same deals that we have but let’s love them let’s love them with the love that God has showed us love to be willing to sacrifice let’s sacrifice our own things that we can share the love of Christ with them and again kids you want to live long as backup a moment. Do you want to live long. I know I joked a couple times as I read through that said you know parents might say I brought you in of doubt. But honor and respect your love and love your parents because they love you they’re doing that they’re done the best job they can and you know we do that as parents we do the best job we can with God’s help of raising our kids and loving them yes we once in a while make mistakes but remember God still working on us kids remember that God still working on us parents remember that God still working on them he’s still working on all of us but let his love work in you. And let that love. Permeate out to others and work on his relationships Amen.
