Sermon – “They Helped Them to Understand”

Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. 3 Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. 4 So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.
Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. 8 So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.
9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.
10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
11 So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them.
13 Now on the second day the heads of the fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law. 14 And they found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, 15 and that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”
16 Then the people went out and brought them and made themselves booths, each one on the roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the Water Gate and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim. 17 So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths;for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness. 18 Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day there was a sacred assembly, according to the prescribed

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

My message this morning are titled they help them to understand they needed understanding and I’m going to be reading this morning from the message bible i typically used and new king james version is most of you know, but I really like the way the message bible read this passage from nehemiah chapter 8 versus one to 18 is a little bit of a long reading. And I’ll just give you fair warning before I even begin. There’s a lot of names in here that I know that I’m not going to pronounce correctly. So just bear with me and because you know, I’m not a scholar in greek or hebrew, so I’m not going to do some of these names, much justice as I’ve tried to pronounce them. So I’ll just do the best I can. Before I begin, let’s go ahead and have a word of prayer. gracious father, we do praise you and magnify you. father, may we humbly bow before you with our lives father. May we surrender or live to you? May we hunger and thirst for you? While I may, we want more of you all the time. father, that’s our focus a day. The want more of you father. That’s what each of us should desire. father, our prayer anointing. Be in his place. I praise your noise and we’ll be on the, the airways is the, goes out over the phone and over the Internet. And I just pray that you would be glorified father. I pray that your word, your truth would be spoken. I pray that hearts will be lifted up. I pray the people will be released from stress or dish, or whatever is in their lives wherever they’re dealing with a pray that your piece or guy will be felt be experienced today by the preaching of your word, for your glory and for your honor in jesus name amen.nehemiah chapter 8 versus one through 18. Here the word of the Lord.By the time the 7th month arrived, the people of israel were settled in their own towns. Now we’re talking about the people of israel did had come back from captivity and babylon, they’ve returned to jerusalem. They’ve come back and they’ve settled in their own towns. Then all the people gathered as one person in the town square in front of the water gate in asked the scholar ezra to bring the book of revelation of moses that god had commanded for israel. So they want them to bring the book, the revelation that god gave moses for israel. So as for the high pri, or the priest brought the revelation to the congregation, which was made up of both men and women. Everyone capable of understanding. I’m going to have this key pause and I was go through here. The fall was not there. The idiot could not understand was not there. Everyone though that had the capacity to be able to understand what as it was going to teach, was there to hear that day. It was the 1st day of the 7th month. He read it facing the town square at the watergate from early dawn until noon. In the hearing of the men and women all who could understand it and all the people listen, they were all ears. To the book of revelation, the scholar ezra stood on the wooden platform constructed for the occasion. He was flanked on the right hand by matter tire, shima and an ayer, your aya, he’ll kaya matt massey, and on the left by pa dire, michel milk, milk, a jaya, hashem hash, but add enough zachariah and mesh alone. Why he had to have people on both sides, right? That is more names. How may you know that they name the names right? They menas were opened, the book and every i was on him. He was standing on the raised platform. And as he opened the book, everyone stood.Everyone stood there, ready, men wrote as it was going to read the book, the longing to hear my friends. I envision that great anticipation, great anticipation for the word of god. hunger.Are we hungry right? Then ezra, praise god, the great god and all the people responded. Oh yes, yes. With raised hot hands with hands raised high, then they failed to their knees and worship of god. Their faces to the ground, joshua vanny shall rubia jammy act echo i cub. submit die, who died? messiah county. As her aia jazz a bad hanan polite all li voids explained the revelation while the people stood listening respectfully. They translated the book of the revelation of god so the people could understand it. And then explain the reading. The AM I the governor along with, as were the priest and scholar and the lead lights, who were teaching people said to all the people this day is a holy day to your god don’t weep and carry on. They said this because all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the revelation. He continued go home and repair a feast, holiday food, and drink and share it with those who don’t have anything. This day is wholly to, God don’t feel bad. The joy of god is your strength. The lead lights calm, the people quiet. Now this is a holy day. Don’t be upset. So the people went off to feast eating and drinking, and including the poor and a great celebration. Now they got it. So they understood right, they understood the reading that had been given to them. And on the 2nd day of the month, the family heads of all the people, the priest and the li bites, gathered around ezra the scholar to get a deeper understanding of the word of the revelation of friends. Are we going deeper?They want a deeper understanding of the word revelations they found written in the revelation that god commanded through moses that the people of israel are to live in booths during the festival of the 7th month.So they publish this as this decree and had posted in all their cities and in jerusalem. Go into the hills and collect olive branches, pine branches, myrtle branches, palm branches and other leafy branches to make boost as it is written. So the people went out brought in branches and made themselves this on the roofs courtyards and the courtyards of the temple of god. The watergate of god of plot the water gate plaza and the efram gate plaza. The entire congregation that had come back from exile made booth to live in them. The people of israel hadn’t done this from the time of joshua, son of none, until that very day. A terrific day, great joy, as were read from the book of revelation of god each day. From the 1st to the last day, they celebrated the piece for 7 days. On the 8th day, they held a solemn assembly in accordance with the cree.My God! At his blessing to hear it in the reading of his holy word.The 1st 7th, the 1st 7, my 7th, the 1st 7 chapters of nehemiah are dedicated to the account of nehemiah returning from shan member. All their israelites were exiled the babylon.But the mire had risen to a very high position. He was a cup bear for the king. So imagine he’s in the presence of the king of babylon here and all that goes on knowing what’s happening. A very high position for this israelites. But somebody had came to visit and he asked, how are things going in my home country? How are things going in jerusalem? How are the people? And they reported that the people were very distressed, very distressed. They returned, yes, they rebuilt their homes or, you know, maybe they had to repair the roof or repair the doors and even rebuilt the temple, or repaired to the temple, i should say, not rebuild. They repaired to temples, but the walls of the city were still destroy. The gates were burned. So the walls of jerusalem was a very important part of the city. That was their protectionand apparently rebuilding the war was too great a task for just anybody. You know, I could build your house. I can build a house. I know how to build a house, but don’t ask me to build a skyscraper.Right. I mean, I had the ability to build a house boat. I wouldn’t have a clue how to go to skyscraper, yawning. I know you probably gonna have to go really because there’s a whole lot digging out of the ground. But I don’t have the ability to do that. Apparently they had nobody with the abilityor the ability to encourage the people to rebuild the wallin or in nehemiah the M, I was the man. He’s the man that god had given the ability, the ability to not over only ever see this project. That was was 2 and a half miles long, 40 feet high, and 8 feet thick with gates everywhere. quite an undertaking. And they did it in $52.00 days, rebuilt the wall. He was the man that god chosen, definitely a man of action. Amanda can encourage people, move. People out will work. Just tell us what to do. So that’s where everyone else was. Yeah. They were union, they needed their break, but nehemiah was that man to give them that nudge and encourage him onezra had returned to jerusalem, 13 years before nehemiah i didn’t know that was starting this out.nehemiah was not the scholar that ezra was, but it appears that his zeal had such a great impact that it didn’t encourage ezra to get out there and share this great knowledge share with you. God is given you maybe those 13 years was 13 years of training for him to get back into god’s word and close. Remember they were excel ezra 78th through 10 says and as were came to jerusalem in the 5th month, which was the 7th year of the king. And on the 1st day the 1st day of the 1st month, he began his journey from babylon. And on the 1st day of the 5th month, he came to jerusalem, according to the good hand of his god upon him for ever had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord and to do it. So not just to learn a law, but to do it my friends, we might know it, but do we do it? Do we practice it right? And to teach statues and ordinances in israel?There was not only for his own understanding, we can study this word every day and every day, but my friends, it’s not just for us. Let’s teach others right. ezra, teaching others. He knew the people knew they needed revived.They’ve been ex, out for 70 years. They needed revived. I found an illustration. And as it’s about being revived, but not spiritually but physically. And you know, it’s a story about a life guard and just a fictional story to reveal a truth. No, this life guards, he’s often when he’s purch any. He looks out in the the ocean air any he sees a young boy babbling face down in the water man. He’s off of that purge grabs is life preserver. And man just speeds across that beached wave. Been train into the water and dives headlong, swims out for the young boy. His body is already turning blue and he grabs the flips him over and swims back to shore as fast as he can with that young boy and drive him up onto the beach course the crowd gather and the pair john. unbeknownst them, they didn’t know that their young boy was in terrible life threatening situation, but they get him up or they try to get the people back. Another emergency personnel is arrived, but the people their distress, they look about young boys pay always birds blue. You’re thinking he’s not breathed and he’s, he’s, he’s not alive. So they’re all in distress. All except for that emergency personnel who know better. They begin to break the breath of life into that young boy and press down on his chest. What seems like an hour, but was probably only actual a few minutes or a sudden a little we call. Right? They got a rolling one to be sad and letting. Get out at him all that stuff. It’s in his stomach and his lungs. And just a little time color came back, lou boys up running around, he’s doing well.He needed the breath of life. He needed that light read in. So in my friends, there’s many today they’re not drowning in the water, but they’re drowning in life.The people of israel were distressed, they had a thing that needed accomplish that. They couldn’t do, they couldn’t handle it, but also they knew that they needed new spiritual life breathed in to them.You know, I know that the official story was at the beach a couple years ago and we seen a young boy probably only this big running up the beachpairs weren’t with him. He had gotten lost and I look back and I see a life guard. So I’m running to the life guard, i’m not real fast run room where, but I’m running to the life guard and I had to get within 10 feet of that stance so I could get his attention because looking to cell phone,I mean, god help the little boy, that might be out in the water drowning today because the life guards are going to look at the cell phones. Pay attention, get your nose out of that, the computer pay attention to people. That’s what they’re there to do, right? Or passage nehemiah was centered this fictional story though, those people knew. They knew that they needed life. They knew that they were distress. They know that they needed revived. They needed a new breath from god. My friends are we there?First one said they ask the people, ask as ro bring the book or the revelation of moses that god had commanded for israel.My friends, if a person has an addiction,but she’s alcoholism. What is the very 1st step for that person to get help or to get he’ll of alcoholism? What’s the 1st stepfor admitting? Thank you just and emitting, they have a problem at step number one. I have a problem, I need help. I can’t do this myself.I had to grandfather’s that rock holly’s. The onehis alcoholism was so bad that he was in the hospital and he drank something they shouldn’t have.He died before I was even born. I never even got to meet him. I knew was pictures of him than any other grandfather. He knew he had a problem immunities problem and got help and lived to be about 90.So he was recovering alcoholic for 4550 yearsand a wonderful man and he helped others 1st step as acknowledge him. We need help acknowledge and we have a problem. israel was acknowledging their shortcomings when he asked ezra to teach them from the book of revelation.They didn’t have a copy of the holy bible. I mean that was century century later, many century later. Right? They didn’t have a copy of the revelations of moses the only ones that had those was the priest. So this was the only way that they can learn what god desired of them.What is god’s plan for our lives? ezra please teach us. Show us, show us what we need to do. They were hungry for the word. They were hungry for the word of god.C S. Lewis said if I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy. The most probable explanation is that I was made for another worldFor as we were made for another world. You know, there is a sin gouge hole in the heart of every person alive, a deep void, get screens to be filled. We attempt to fill that void with everything from adrenalin rush activities to relationships, to create to careers. But the problem with these attempts is that none of them will ultimately satisfy that voice. You may find a certain amount of enjoyment. You might find a little bit of contentment here, and there are no things.But in the end, you’ll still find yourself empty and longing for more. That huge void is still going to be empty.Perfect example, my friend is king solomon. Is he not?It’s hard for us to wrap our minds around how rich he really was in kings 1014. It tells us that solomon had receive $666.00 talents of gold each and every year as a base income in today you convert that to today’s money. What they had then compared to what we have today. That would be $1500000000.00 a year.Come on now. What am I going to do with all that money? Right? One I’m going to do with that. That’s a lot of money. No matter what center you live in. So basically, solid was so rich, he could buy whatever he wanted. And he took full advantage of his assets. He wrote in ecclesiastes, these 210 and whatever my eyes desire, i did not keep from him from them whatever my eyes desired. I had it. What he saying,I kept my heart from no pleasure.whatsoever.You know, isn’t that the dream of many men to day all if I could just when the power ball, right? But when the law be set right on limited resources, power, respect, excitement, pleasure,right? I could just when the lottery will solomon had it all. But listen to what solomon eventually confessed. Then I considered all that my hands had done, and toil, i had expanded, and in, in toil i had expanded in doing it. And behold, all was vanity in striving after the wind and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. Please. Yes, it’s $211.00. Nothing to be gain under the sun. He withheld from his pleasure. Nothing that is I saw play found it was still empty. Still had that void that gap in void in his heart. All vanity striving after when nothing to be gain. Those are some powerful words warranty, but it gets worse. In verse 17 he said, so I hated life.The guy had everything, women, event adventure path, he had more wise than any one man would ever need.No man needs more than one.Man, a man here go down the road, a man unlimited resources. Anything and he desired to build, he could buildbeautiful retreats, but he ends up hating life,hating life. That’s because nothing can fill that void except god.And what was true for solomon, my friends is true for us. All the money in a world is not going to fill that void. Give us the contentment that we can find in god.We may try to fill that voidbut wind up hating those things because they take so much of our time.Matthew $56.00 as blessone are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be failed, they shall be filledburst 9 in our passage, said nehemiah the governor along with as the priest and scholar and the lead lights who were teaching people said to all the people this day is wholly to God, your god, don’t weep and carry on. They said this because all the people were weeping as a heard the word of the revelation. Why were they weeping?Because they were here and the truth. They were hearing the truth, they were hearing god’s plan, god’s purpose for their lives. They were hearing about their sins. god’s word, the law reveal sin, right. That was with the law. Does it reveals areas where we need toget right with god.Oh, that’s a sin, ivory pen of that lord. Their hearts were tender, their hearts were convicted because they had not been walking in the plans and the ways that god ordained for them to walk. They realized that they had not been keeping the peace of tabernacles. That was on the 2nd day, the reading. So when they do, posted everyone, go out, gather your branches, we need to build those pieces. tabernacles, also known as a piece to boose.It was celebrated on the 15th of thethe 15th of the hebrew mart tish ry, which was the 7th month on hebrew calendar. It would be our mid september to October.The fees would begin $5.00 days after the day of atonement. At the time of the fall, harvest were the when the fall, harvest rather had just been completed. But what was this about? What was this piece to booth? It was a time. Yes to celebrate god’s provision for the harvest that they had just completed. All that god had provided for them, but also a time to remember their time in a wilderness to remember that time. 40 years out there in the wilderness, a barren land.And God provided. He provided manna from heaven. 6 days a week, he rested on the 7th. We all know that story. When you go out to gather on the 6th day, gather twice as much, and it’ll carry through the 7. You have food for the sabbath day. If they would go out on any other day and grab up twice as much is going to be wrought in the next morning. But if they were faithful to God to follow what he commanded, and only gather that much, it was good. It lasted all day, better families, god provided quail. God provided water, water from the rock. So that’s what this time in a booth was you know, get out of your comfortable houses. And remember what I did for you. Remember think back. Remember what I did for your ancestors. So it was a time of remember, it’s focusing on god hungry for god. The reading of the word convicted them, it moved them to actIn acts and a new testament peter preaching to the people in acts to verse 36 and 39 says therefore let all the house of israel know assuredly that god has made this jesus whom you crucified both lord and christ. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart. So their hearts were tender also they were cut to the heart and said to peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brother, and what shall we do then peter said to them, repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of jesus. christ for the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the holy spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all who are far off. As many as a lord or god will callmy friends, the heart has to be tender. 3rd has to be ready to hear the word of god. It brought them to tears. Have we come to the place where the word of god will convict us and bring us to tears, doable hunger for more that will want more of god. They will want to know god’s plan for our lives. What is our purpose or purposes to understand him or purpose is to have a relationship with him. But we are plan for eternity. But the only way there’s through jesus christ, but we must repent of our sins and believe in him. You know, that word is says was for those far off, it didn’t mean those in a distant land. Maybe not only in a distant land but also met. Those are far off in time. My friends is meant for us today repair of your sins. Every one of your repair of your sins would be baptized in the name of jesus christ and he will be faithful. And just to forgive us, our sinsgod has given us the means to revive a cold heart. A means to fill that void a means to breathe breath into that spiritual life that we need, that we desire to restore that passion for him.ecclesiastics 311 said he has made everything beautiful when it’s time. Also, he has put eternity in their hearts except that no one can find out the work that god does from the beginning to the end.We will not find it, god has put eternity, and every one of our hearts were created in his image. His plan was that man would live for eternity with him and that relationship, he put it into the hearts of every man and every woman. And I tell you we cannot find eternity in a temporary things of this world.You will not find it.You will only find it in relationship with jesus christ, the son and God, the father and holy spirit, that’s the only place we can find eternity for salvation and none other than jesus christ have you made? Well, let me say it back up. st augustine says, you have made us for yourselves. Oh gods in our hearts are restless until they find the rest in youNice quote.My friends are you wearing, are you distressed? Are you discouraged? Do you need rest? For your soul, you will find it. No other place than god. He is the only place that will find rest for souls. The only place that will fill that void, that is in our hearts because god is put eternity in there. That’s that void. It needs filled. And only he can fill it.So anyone may be listening that day I encourage you believe on the Lord jesus christcome to him says come the see how that works. Ye who are wearyCome to me and you shall find rest. If your load is heavy, come to him. He may not take that lo clean offer you, but he’s going to help you bear you’ll find rest for your souls.You’re turning your eternal soul. A man.
